Merry and Happy Days to the Solitary Souls of Cinema

Holiday films are supposed to make us feel better. They usually end with the main characters eventually basking in the warmth of friends and family and reminding us that this is what it is all about. But what kind of Christmas would the solitary souls of cinema enjoy?

Ethan Edwards ("The Searchers")

What kind of holiday would Ethan enjoy? I seriously doubt he'd really enjoy an old fashioned rum punch with his family, even after Debbie returned home. After a morning of scorching a Comanche village or two, he might top the day off with a few swigs of Chain Lighting (a furniture varnish flavored whiskey favored in western saloons) and a meditative stare into Monument Valley.

Jay Gatsby ("The Great Gatsby")

Since Gatsby is destined not to spend his holidays with Daisy, he might throw a raucous party at his elegant/vulgar estate. All of his "friends" would be there, but in his soul he alone because she - Daisy - his true love -  is not there. His loneliness is a prison among a crowd. He stares at the green light atop his tree.

Catherine Sloper ("The Heiress")

Oh, pity the poor lonely spinster! But don't pity Catherine. She found out that Morris was a gold digger before it was too late, her hateful father is dead as a door nail and she has Daddy's fortune. No, once she finishes her tapestry she is off to Paris to kick up her heels. But Catherine will always keep her own council and walk her own solitary path, even if she takes a mate. I predict she will invent the pre-nup.

The Tramp ("The Circus")

The Tramp has always been a solitary soul. Yes, he ended  "The Kid" with a warm welcome from mother and son, and he did whoop it up (in his imagination) on New Year's Eve with those dance hall girls from "The Gold Rush," but "The Circus" finds him alone again. Christmas is a melancholy time for the little fellow, a time of sentimentality. But, the Tramp is an observer, never really a participant. His heart is great, but he is, in the end, meant to be alone, free to move on, free to find more beauty in this mixed up world.

Whether you are alone or in a crowd, make sure you taste the eggnog and look for the beauty in life. And for goodness sake, put some rum in it!

Christmas Gifts for My Favorite Movie Characters

Here is my wish list for a few of my needy favorites:

Vivian Revere ("Three on a Match")

I wish Vivian a trip to rehab before her son was kidnapped and she took that final swan dive out the window. It might have helped.

Lina Lamont ("Singin' in the Rain")

I wish Lina a seat on the board at Monumental Pictures. After all the money she made that studio, she needs a nice cushy job. I guess I should wish Kathy Selden a job at MGM, as I'm sure Lina would not hire her.

Max Von Mayerling ("Sunset Boulevard")

I wish Max one more chance behind a real camera. I also hope he has Norma's power of attorney, so that he can pay her legal fees and maybe move the chimp to a pet cemetery.

Rocky Sullivan ("Angels with Dirty Faces")

For the boy who could not run as fast as his pal, Father Jerry, a brand new pair of sneakers. Maybe these would have helped him avoid a life of crime.

Mr. Bernstein ("Citizen Kane")

I wish Mr. Bernstein a visit from the girl in the white dress with the white parasol. She will tell him all about her life and confess that not a month has gone by since she saw him over 20 years ago that he has not crossed her mind.

Wishing you and yours a lovely holiday and a very happy new year. See you in 2015!

My Fantasy Christmas

I usually avoid writing about television, this being a movie blog and all that. However, television was the medium that introduced me to classic films, fed my dreams of Hollywood and remains, still, through DVDs and TCM, my main venue for viewing movies. It was also the first breeding ground of my fantasy life (you know, the one where I grow up and marry Cary Grant). So, this Christmas, instead of lovely starlets posing for Christmas publicity photos, I offer my fantasy Christmas family (1960s-style with a little give and take over the decades).

Make Room for Daddy was my favorite TV show as a kid. First of all, Danny Williams and his family lived in this very sophisticated New York apartment with 2 levels! It seemed very appropriate for a nightclub entertainer of Danny's caliber to be living in such a nice place. I never understood why Ricky Ricardo, who appeared to have a good thing going at the Tropicana, forced Lucy to live in that crummy apartment.
"Ricky, don't be so cheap!
Get outta that crummy apartment and live a little!
I related to this show because people were always yelling at one anther and wise cracking, which is kind of how my house was. The house that Dr. and Donna Stone lived in seemed as far removed from reality to me as the land of Oz.

Danny reminded me of my dad. He was not a nightclub entertainer, but he was beleaguered by a bunch of us whose mouths knew little restraint.

Marjorie Lord as Kathy was, to me, the perfect TV mom. She was loving and chic. Plus, my own mom was a redhead and I always thought they were the prettiest ladies.
My brothers were considerable older, but they were wiseguys like Rusty. My resemblance to Linda was mentioned frequently.

I am swapping big sister Sherry Jackson's Terry for Sally Field's Gidget - just because it is my fantasy.

A special seat at the family table wound have to be  saved for Uncle Tonoose. He is by far my favorite uncle and I love him dearly.

My TV aunt that comes for Christmas is Samantha Stevens. That might mean that Endora is either Danny's or Kathy's mom, but I can't go there. Anyway, she is one of my favorite aunts because she is so beautiful and stylish and seems to have some special powers. I hope I grow up to inherit her nose (but if Danny is my dad, well.... I guess she is related to Kathy). Only Darrin #1 accompanies her in my fantasy.

My other favorite aunt is Susie MacNamara (of Private Secretary). Now, I only got to see this show on morning reruns, but I was always enamored of Ann Sothern's working girl. She was single, stylish and supporting herself. I want to sit right next to her. I realize that her boss, Mr. Sands, was Gidget's father, but that does not happen in my fantasy. Thought - get outta my head!!

And so, that is my happy Christmas family. Rusty, Gidget and I would get up early and unwrap our gifts (Rusty and I both get an a Viewmaster and an Etch a Sketch, Rusty also gets Rock 'em Sock 'em Robots and the Game of Mousetrap. I am so happy with my Easy Bake Oven and the dolls that looks just like me! Big sister Gidget is thrilled with her paisley skirt and go go boots).

It was a marvelous Christmas and many years later I return home. Danny and Kathy still live in the same apartment and I am now Ann Marie, aspiring actress, fashion plate and daddy's girl.

Hoping your holiday season is filled with love and peace and the warmth of family and good friends (real and imagined).

Thank You, Santa!

Dear Santa:

What, oh what, should I get my darling little wife, FlickChick, for Christmas?
Flicky can be so picky!
Should I get her:
A diamond tiara?
No.....it might tangle her lovely hair.

A new Bentley?
No...she never learned to drive a stick shift.

A house in the country?
No... too far from the shops.
What's that you say, Santa?
Of course! Why didn't I think of that?
I must hurry home an wrap it up nicely! I know it's just what she wants!

IT'S ME!

What better present for my FlickChick darling to find under the tree?

ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS... (movie-wise, that is)

In the spirit of the season, here are some Christmas wishes for some movie-folks who might need a helping hand from Santa.

Santa, do your stuff!

I wish for Scarlett and Rhett to find their way back to one another.
I wish for Citizen Kane's Mr. Bernstein to meet that girl in the white dress.
I fervently wish Mrs. Danvers does NOT find any matches at Manderley while the master and his missus are out.
I wish for Rick to get his letter of transit and meet up with Ilsa in Paris after the war. All will be forgiven.
I wish for Norma Desmond to make Salome and that's it's a big, mega- hit.
I wish for Rocky Sullivan to get a last minute pardon from the Governor.
I wish for Old Yeller to get a rabies shot.
I wish for Tony Randall to get Doris Day just once!
I wish for Margo Channing to beat Eve Harrington out for a Tony, an Oscar and an Emmy - all in the same year!
I wish for Irene Dunne/Deborah Kerr to look both ways before rushing to the top of the Empire State Building.

Oh yes - and I wish for world peace.
And - to you, Dear Reader, may Santa leave your heart's desire in your stocking, under the tree or any place else where you can find it!
